“Welcome on board today. Hello. Welcome. Good to see you. Morning.” I took a breath but continued smiling as the passengers slowly wended their way past me at the front of the aircraft, down the main cabin, looking for their seats.
This was always a good time to assess the general mood. Sometimes the entire complement of passengers just felt off – giving off a negative vibe. We hated those flights. But today’s seemed to be full of energy, smiles, and a low-key excitement. I particularly noticed one young family, a dad and a mom with toddlers. When they did find their seats, it was nice to see that the people around them didn’t show their displeasure. It was going to be a good flight…
As my colleagues and I walked up and down the passageways in the cabin, we ensured that seatbelts were fastened, luggage securely stowed away, and that everyone appeared comfortable and at ease. Today it didn’t appear that there was anyone who looked especially nervous or out of sorts. Through years of experience, I knew to give those individuals a reassuring smile, a light touch, or say a comforting word or two.
“Cabin crew, close the doors, and prepare the cabin for takeoff.”
That was my cue to perform the mandatory safety check. I noticed, with a slight chuckle, that the young family was trying to shush the toddlers, and the mother was reading the safety card. Perhaps it is their first time flying?
The frequent flyers basically ignored me as I went through the spiel that we all could recite in our sleep. I bet some of my passengers could recite this too!
We backed out of our space and began to taxi to the runway, before taking to the air. I took a look down my portion of the cabin to assess my passengers. Some clenched their arm-rests as though their lives depended on it; others had already fallen asleep!
As the aircraft lifted through the air, the sun peeked into the cabin through the open portals, adding a pleasant glow to the interior. These early morning flights were my favorite.
We leveled out, and as per usual, our captain came on the cabin announcements: “Good morning, and thank you for flying American Airlines. We have clear skies today, just a few wisps of clouds and we should make good time to Los Angeles. Our cabin crew will be around in a few minutes with light snacks and drinks. We hope you settle back and enjoy the flight.”
American Airlines Flight 11 never made it to LA that fateful September day in 2001.
We will never forget.
