Sleepily, I grabbed my books and a torch. It would be dark for hours yet, but I knew from bitter experience that I would not be able to sleep once we started the long drive to the beach, and I was not about to spend hours gazing out of the window into the ink-black darkness of the night sky if I could help it.
Sixteen hours later (a new record according to my very proud father), we pulled into the camping site we would call home for the next month. My brother, Joshua, and I leapt out of the car and immediately headed towards the sound of the crashing waves. We had put our swimming costumes on under our clothes in anticipation. We both knew our parents would fuss and moan at each other as they erected the tent and the caravan accouterments. Better to stay out of their hair and see if any of our summer friends had made it back this year.
It did not take long for us to find Emily and Leon, brother and sister, much the same age as us and whom we had befriended the summer before. Like us, they were staying at the beach for a month, and their campsite was only a few hundred metres from our caravan.
A pleasant hour or so was spent catching up, building sandcastles, and diving in and out of the waves with Em and Leon, before our mother wended her way down to the ocean, calling us back for dinner. Josh and I followed mum back to the campsite, where we found our father brewing coffee over a fire. Camp coffee was the only coffee I liked, and he had made enough for mum and me.
As we sat in our camp chairs and I sipped my coffee, I surveyed the little piece of paradise we would call home for the next month. It was quiet, apart from the monkeys rustling around in the trees above us (we had learnt from prior experience that all food had to be stored in air-tight and monkey-proof containers), the chuckle of the surf breaking on the sand and the high-pitched yodeling of the young Xhosa men who swam among the rocks to catch ‘intlanzi yokuloba’ (crayfish) to sell to the campers.
I settled back in my chair and contentedly sipped my camp coffee, relishing spending the month of December at Coffee Bay, part of the wild coast of the Transkei.
