I was a young adult before I ever saw an ocean. I was enthralled with it and the beach that came with it! One of the phenomenas that intrigued me was the changes brought about by the ebb and flowing of the tides. I would marvel at the mesmerizing rhythms of the waves and smile at the sand castles with moats dotting the beach. Then in the evening I returned to observe an entirely different landscape, the sandcastles all swept away.

I was also fascinated by the things that washed up on the beach. Drift wood, seashells, scurrying crabs, fragile sand dollars all grabbed for my attention. In addition to the beach, the waters held an uncountable number of sea life—sleek dolphins, slimy jellyfish, prickly crabs, and much more.

I wasn’t too eager to get in the water, and get knocked down by the salty waves, but walking along the shore in ankle deep surf was something I could do all day.

As beautiful and fascinating as the seashore can be, it is not a place to build a home and settle down. While the scenery with breath-taking sunrises and sunsets would be awesome to take in every day, the shifting sands are rather treacherous for houses.

As I took in all the beauty and attraction of the beach I was reminded of one of Jesus stories. The one He told at the end of the Sermon on the Mount. He said one must put into practice what He taught. That is like building a house on solid rock. But to ignore what Jesus taught is like the person who builds a house on sand. That house cannot withstand the storms of life and will fall flat! Viewing the ocean and waves brought that comparison into clear focus.

I began doing some self examination. Am I regularly reading my Bible and putting into practice what it says? Am I asking Jesus for help in applying His teachings? I want my life to be built on the solid rock of Christ Jesus.

“Father, please help me as I learn what Jesus taught and apply the principles to my life. While the beach is attractive and breath-taking in its beauty, help me to be aware of the dangers as well. Thank you. Amen.”
