The vessel pitched and yawed throwing the occupants around.
Eight people, and numerous creatures, imprisoned in gopher wood and pitch, darkness and desperation, fear and one man’s faith, held their collective breath.
Noah read the faces of his family and sighed heavily.
This trip was not his idea.
Building this ark, not his choice.
Leaving everything behind an inoperable door, closed by the very hand of God, not in his control.
Almost one hundred tours around the sun he worked, and conscripted his sons to work, on plans given him by the very hand of God. Plans to build a great ship to keep them safe from God’s wrath.
A trip forced on Him by God.
God….Noah’s friend.
God….The Fear to others.
Others….all gone. Drown in the deluge.
At least that’s what God said He would do - erase the unrighteous from the face of the Earth.
Noah’s mind wandered back to that fateful day when he walked with God and the journey was revealed.
“I’m sorry I have created man,” God sighed, “there is none righteous but you my friend.”
Noah was shocked. Yes, most people were not interested in God, and did not accept the invitation for intimacy and friendship.
And yes, some were down right evil.
“But surely,” Noah plead, “I can’t be the only one who meets with You?”
God looked at him with sorrow-filled eyes.
Noah shuffled his feet. His breath hung frozen in his lungs.
“I’m going to destroy all mankind, all creatures, everything I have created.”
Noah stopped in his tracks. God reached out and placed a loving hand on his shoulder.
“But I will save you, My friend.”
They walked on in silence.
“I need you to make an ark.”
“An ark? What is an ark?”
“It is a boat in which you can float on the waters and not drown. I will open the floodgates of the heavens and the earth. It will rain until the earth is covered with water. All mankind…all I have created, will perish. All but you, your family, and the creatures I send to you.”
Noah was so confused. An ark? Rain? All will die but he and his family? Animals? What of his friends…his cousins, aunts, uncles?
He stopped in his tracks, fell to the ground, covered his face and wept.
God picked him up and embraced him.
“This is a journey you must make. I know this is not your choice, however, I need you to trust Me. I am good and My love endures all things…even this one way trip I’m asking you to take.”
Noah melted into Love. He trusted God. He loved his Friend. He would go where He asked. He just hoped his family would understand.
They didn’t.
Now, after years of conflict, questions, and bitter criticism, they were locked together in a floating prison responsible to keep God’s creation alive.
It was a one way ticket to doubt.
