Topic: TRIP (08/25/22)
It’s been 10 years, yet the events of that day are still so vivid in my mind that I relive them over and over in my sleep. I can’t seem to shake the demons of the past; the questions, the guilt, the “what if’s”.

Time just moves on, for everybody else anyway, but for me, it’s like the accident knocked the earth off its axis just a speck, leaving me cold and irreparably altered. Moving forward, for me, has been like swimming in molasses.

I can attest that life can be difficult after tragedy — faith too. I was angry and disillusioned. I took all of that to God, and I wrestled with Him over this for a long time and in some ways, still do. These days, one moment I am weak and the next strong. It is a constant battle, yet I know my comforter and my hope.

I’ve discovered that deep faith, refined faith, only comes through the fire of trials and tribulation. I now see that the faith I claimed before was just a beginning, a time of discovery and preparation for the storm that would come…and its aftermath.

Before, it seemed life stretched out before me with every blessing and every possibility. Now, I’ve learned that I must take life’s journey one day at a time. Some days are harder than others. Some days, like today, I’m not sure how I’ll make it through.

When the clouds begin to darken deep inside and the tears flow — and they still do — I fall on my knees and listen. And every time, there in the midst of my whirlwind, I hear a whisper: “Keep going…he is with me, and I am with you.”

Five of them died that night – five kids. Young men with their whole lives before them, including Andrew. He was just 19 years old. We’ll meet tonight at 3:45 — all of us, at the sight of the accident. We remember, we pray, we comfort, we try to forgive.

I can’t wait to see him again one day, but I know there is a reason I’m still here. And while the road ahead is sure to be a long one, I’m getting there…moment by moment, day by day. I’m on my way.
