Accessories that prevail
Against the challenges of the deep
When a will to swim, did hail.
I have a goodly story,
The retelling never stale
Of how I dove in way too deep
And lived to tell the tale.
One day I took a fancy
To swim the ocean’s tide,
Though normally it’s horses
And cattle that I ride.
I rarely think of danger,
Whether fire, snakes, or drought,
We country folk are hardy
And walk about with clout.
So, it happened while out riding
To the Lord, I praised and called
‘I’m not worried about the ocean
You made it, after all.’
And off I went to shores far-flung
Captivated by ocean’s swell,
It seemed below its rise and fall
Giant lungs must surely dwell.
My prowess as a swimmer
Was not entirely sure,
But such a trifling hindrance
Was for the more mature.
So I dove right in, beneath the waves
Where fish move - so free
To find that certain humans
Have no such liberty.
There were no lungs, to cause the swell
As far as I could see,
Though I happened upon a grinning shark,
Who thought to nibble me.
He circled, swam, and blinked an eye
And suddenly I could swim
When a healthy school of fishes
Proved aperitif, entrée for him.
I kicked and splashed and took in air
When the surface I soon broke
I called to warn some swimmers,
Some splashing heedless folk.
‘That‘s not a shark you country boy
You’ve swum out way too deep
And found our local dolphin
His company to keep.’
I still made haste to sandy shore
My legs and arms intact,
And whispered to my Lord above,
‘I’m never coming back.’
If next I take a fancy
To swim in oceans wide,
I’ll stay atop my trusty horse
With a shotgun at my side.
We country hicks are hardy blokes
Watering holes are deep and brown
And though we swim occasionally
Sea creatures - are never found.

Wow! What a splendid poem! I enjoyed every stanza. As I enjoyed the content, tone, rich diction and other figures of speech, suddenly, I saw and heard the unique rhymes I thought were linguistic feats reserved for ilks like Shakespeare and Wordsworth. Well-done!
