Do not send flowers I needed before my call
Or go in debt for foolish trappings
With money that might have helped back then.
Simply honor the things I have tried to share
When you were not listening, or maybe a little,
But did not seem to grasp because I was vague
About the things that mean your very life--eventually.
Time goes faster than the mind can comprehend
When watching from this end, though not as much
When fresh and nothing seems impossible
And worldly matters weigh less but then grow heavy.
As it was from the beginning, nothing is new
Merely repackaged to confuse and mislead dumb sheep
Who, thinking other grass is greener, look up to see
They have wandered from the Shepherd who knows the way.
The only Testament I can leave for you to embrace will confirm
Truth about the false comfort of a stinking-thinking trap,
An evil façade that offers a rude awakening in an ugly place
But by then, sadly, the time is up, and no do-overs are allowed.
No silly superstitions handed down about ladders and broken
Mirrors, or wearing good-luck socks, or clutching clovers with
Four leaves while hoping for a windfall or gambling even more on
This and that will get you closer to the place you need to be.
No substances to smoke or drink or swallow like a fool
Nor games and party pals for revelry and fun, nor speaking idle
Things and drifting to a bed in which you will be forced to lie
Will ever bring a blessed peace beyond understanding.
It’s not about a building called a church or denominations
Overgrown and choking with debates that give no hope
Or following arbitrary hand-picked rules and doctrines
While lighting candles and reeling in the dark.
But, in the end, when it’s time to face the music,
I pray that all who will inherit the words I leave for you to
Read (with open hearts and minds) will be rejoicing when
You join believers as we praise and sing, “HALLELUJAH!”
