Mouthing the words
But the heart’s not there
This rite is not quite right
Every week I mindlessly go to church
Jesus awaits my fellowship
But I leave Him in the lurch
This rite is not quite right
Fasting to show my devotion
Seeking from other my promotion
In their eyes
Their praise my prize
This rite is not quite right
I put my offering in the plate
Seeking by this to abate
Any guilt over not giving
But is that truly living
By his Grace?
This rite is not quite right
I pray over my food
Depending on my mood
I pray in a hurry
So I can dig into my curry
This rite is not quite right
When my eyes are on me
I will never be free
I’ll have selfishness chains
Spirituality drains
From my soul
When the rite is not quite right
There are many informal rites in our churches today
Tradition, obligations and “we’ve always done it this way”
But is the rite from the heart
Does it set us apart
From the world?
If it doesn’t shine our light
This rite is not quite right
But…
If we go to church to meet God
If we give because we love God
If we pray to bring hearts close to God
He’ll smile and give us the nod
That this rite is finally right
