Waiting! I ....hate.....WAITING! I don't even like waiting for my water to boil when I'm rushing around fixing my breakfast. Lately I have had to wait for the results of a shift bid at work. It was supposed to happen last August. Then after postponing the announced shift for several weeks, they started the whole process over with everyone having to resubmit their choices of shifts.
It was going to be announced in October, then November. now who knows. How can I plan my life if I don't know if my schedule is going to be 7 to 4:30 pm. Or 3:30 pm to midnight, or somewhere in between? So how do I schedule my doctor's appointments, my visits to my sister, my trip to Paris? Ok, that last one wouldn't happen anyway, but the rest could happen if I only knew my schedule.
There were so many people who had to wait in the Bible: Joseph waiting in prison, Rachel waiting to marry Jacob, Sarah waiting for a promised child. And then I thought of a woman who is not named in the Bible but who undoubtedly experienced an excruciating wait. I wonder what it would have been like to be Jairus' wife.
PUTS ON A BIBLICAL HEADDRESS
Where are you going, Jairus? Our little girl is so sick and you're leaving her! Oh, you're going to get Jesus, that ragtag rabbi that you complained about in synagogue last week because he healed that bent-over woman on the Sabbath! Of course! That's a brilliant idea! Go, go now, go quickly. Find that Jesus and bring him here. I'm sure he'll come. After all, you're one of the leaders of our synagogue. I'm sure Jesus knows your place and his own place. Now go! (MAKES SHOOING GESTURE WITH HER HANDS) I don't know how much longer our daughter can last! Go!
MIMES CRADLING A 12-YEAR OLD. My precious child, your father is getting someone to make you better. Daughter? Daughter?
It's too late! I was so patiently waiting for Jairus to bring Jesus. And now it's too late.
Thomas, go find my husband and tell him not to brother the rabbi any more. Jacob, go tell those professional mourners that have been lurking around the house, waiting for our woe, that their services are now required.
WAILS ALOUD. Those phony wails of those paid mourners don't ease my grief, they magnify it. But as least, I'm not mourning alone as I wait once again; this time for my husband to join my grief.
LIFTS HER HEAD. There's a voice I don't recognize out there, he sounds both kind and authoritative at the same time. That voice sounds vaguely familiar…oh yes, I heard him speak at synagogue. It’s Jesus!
What did he say? “The little girl is not dead, she is asleep.” And the mourners are all laughing at him. But those words grow a little seed of hope in my heart. For if he’s saying my child is asleep, could it be, could it possibly be…he’s going to wake her up?
Jesus sends all the mourners and neighbors away leaving only Jairus and me and Jesus’ disciples. I squeeze Jairus’ hand as we watch Jesus. I haven’t squeezed any hand that tightly since the day I gave birth to our daughter. Will this agonizing time also lead to a breathtaking moment of joy?
What’s he saying now? “Little girl, get up.” Oh my. Our daughter just got up and walked across the room as if she’d never been sick. Thank you, Jesus, you were so worth waiting for.
TAKES OFF THE HEADDRESS
And now I know what Jairus' wife would say, “Jesus is so worth waiting for.”
If Mary and Martha
And Jairus and his wife
Can wait to have their
loved ones brought back to life
I can wait for my schedule
and other such things
For my dreams to come true
because of the hope Jesus brings
Jesus is so worth waiting for
When His opportunity finally knocks at my door
It will be greater than my hopes
Greater than my dreams
For the world is not in charge
Even though that’s the way it seems
But when the waiting time is up
Jesus overflows my cup
With more than I could ask
He can handle any task
Jesus is so worth waiting for.
