Under his thin cloak, he reached for the crust of bread he had found near the pigsty. His chew savored every morsel. His belly rumbling wouldn’t keep him awake tonight.
Sleep filled his eyes and he wondered if life would be any different someday. Is this all there is? A faint remembrance of a soft arm around his shoulders and an elusive fragrance would disappear when he awakened.
A sudden commotion aroused him. He saw shepherds coming towards the town. He knew of their reputation of thievery and murder. Their excited words drifted through the night air reaching him in bits and pieces. They must be drunk, he thought. ‘Angels’ and ‘star’ came to his ears.
But they were moving too fast. They traveled with purpose towards a destination as if they knew where they were going. Curious and now wide awake, he moved to follow them.
As he moved from shadow to shadow, he realized they were headed towards the stables. Not wanting to reveal himself he found a nearby sheltered place to watch.
His small frame shivered from the night cold and his bare feet felt every pebble. He crept closer to the stable and saw the soft glow of light emitting from the shelter.
His eyes widened at the sight. A babe had been born! Did the shepherds know these people? Why were they in the stable and not in a home? This is no place to birth a human babe!
He saw curious emotions crossing the faces of the shepherds. He couldn’t understand their joy. It was just a babe … or was it? The lantern glows illuminated the husband’s and wife’s faces. Wonder and amazement shone as they focused on the babe.
Then he smelled it. The slightest whiff of the long-ago memory wafted through his nose. He watched the mother with awe as she caressed and soothed the babe. He felt the arms and remembered the words once spoken in his ears. Where he hovered in the darkness, a brilliant light from above shone into his heart and warmed his soul.
