Is something that I never shall forget.
Though he's been gone for thirty years, I still recall that look.
I miss him more and more each day and yet…
I know he's there with Jesus and he's watching over me
Much like he did when I was just a child.
I'd crawl up on his lap and wrap my arms around his neck
And say, "I love you," while my daddy smiled.
When I was only three years old, I knew the time of day
When Daddy would come walking up the street.
His work there on the railroad left his clothing full of soot
I didn't care; I found the fragrance sweet.
He'd put his lunch pail down and open wide his arms to me
While I'd call out his name, "My Daddy Boy."
I'd kiss his sweating face and snuggle as he held me close,
For daddy always filled my life with joy.
As I grew older, I discerned that Daddy loved God's Word.
He studied it and read it through and through.
If I would ask him where a certain Scripture verse was found,
He'd tell me, and the verses 'round it, too.
When I was still in high school, there were times my friends would ask
If I would join in things I knew were sin.
I'd think of what my dad would say and how his heart would break
When learning that his girl had given in.
The day I left for college, Daddy tried to hide his tears.
He seemed to know that I'd be gone for good.
I'd meet a man who'd someday ask to share his life with me
And I would leave behind my childhood.
Years later my dear husband told me news I can't forget.
He said my dad was ill and might soon die.
We drove 800 miles all night long to get back home
In time for me to tell my dad "goodbye."
I stood there in his sterile room, so glad that I'd arrived
So I'd be there before my dad was gone.
"I'm going to be with Jesus," Daddy whispered in my ear.
He closed his eyes and left this world at dawn.
I'll see that look of love again when I meet Dad above.
I'm looking forward to his warm embrace.
But I will know a love that I have never known before
When I shall see Christ Jesus face-to-face.
