And caused two souls to sever,
Although they’d vowed at altar’s side
That they’d keep it forever?
Did heat of angry words melt it,
Ones they should not have spoken,
Or sundering of sacred vows
They selfishly had broken?
Perhaps it withered like a flower
Away from light too long,
Or was it like a little bird
That somehow lost its song?
Did love that left replace itself
With hate or resignation
To fill the couple left behind
With utter desolation?
No matter how love disappeared
And where it might have gone,
The sweetness of its memory
Had lingered on and on.
Yet, hurting hearts, forgotten hopes
Could caring God restore
And stir the embers that remained
To brightest love once more.
He took away their shattered hearts
To with forgiveness, mend them,
Repaired the ties of brokenness,
And poured out grace to blend them.
