I even laughed at Yahweh.
Well,wouldn't you?
There I was, post-menopause,
getting on in years,
when Yahweh told Abe
that I would be a mother,
get pregnant,
give birth.
I overheard Him,
listened in,
and laughed.
I already knew the promise:
Descendants galore
like the stars in the sky.
I had held that promise
close to my breast
like the babe I longed for.
But year after year,
after year after year
barrenness scoffed at me.
My servants whispered
behind their hands,
and still I waited,
always on the move,
still childless,
hope fading away.
I had hatched my plans,
and Abe his intrigues,
but now time stretched out
as age crept through our bodies,
as we waited
for the promised child.
So I laughed at His words,
for I was worn out,
and Abe as good as dead.
But this new timeline
took my breath away,
gripped at my heart.
Could it be true
that this ageing body
would bear a child?
And I believed.
Oh, I trusted
Yahweh, the faithful one.
Till these wrinkled arms
held to my joyful breast
the promised babe.
So, may my story be told
to the the grains of sand
on a thousand beaches,
to my children's children's children
and generations beyond.
May praise be to Yahweh.
Genesis 18 (NIV)
The LORD said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah. So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?”
Hebrews 11.11 (NIV)
By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised. Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore.
