‘Hi, Cat-boy, I’m Nana.’
‘Time to eat, Tim.’
‘Nana! I’m not Tim. I’m Cat-boy.’
‘Well Cat-boy needs to eat too,’ I said.
Reluctantly Tim removed the Cat-boy mask and sat down to his dinner.
When my five-year old grandson dons the Cat-boy costume, he is not pretending to be Cat-boy, he IS Cat-boy. Calling him Tim is an insult to him! His mannerisms, his voice, his whole persona is Cat-boy and he is absolutely convinced that his disguise is so good that I cannot tell the difference!
Colossians 3:12 (NIV) tells us, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” And Romans 13:14 (ESV) says, “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ…”
Am I clothed in Christ? Am I compassionate, kind, gentle and patient? Is my ‘disguise’ on well enough or do I peek through every so often?
‘Cat-boy, it’s time for bed now,’ I called.
‘Silly Nana, Cat-boy doesn’t sleep,’ Tim informed me. He slipped the face mask off, ‘But I am ready for stories!’
‘Ok Tim,’ I said. ‘Let’s read ‘Where The Wild Things Are.’’ And we settled in to read the story of a little boy who was so immersed in his disguise he sailed off through night and day…
