That everywhere we went
Was another happy adventure.
He took me to meet his parents,
Who welcomed me with warmth
As a daughter-in-law to be.
When we wanted to go for a drive
So he could share with me
The places of his childhood,
His father handed him the keys
To his little white Falcon car.
We proceeded to tour the town,
Where we stopped at his favorite haunts.
When we reached some lovely gardens,
My sweetheart said to me,
“I want you to drive in here.”
I told him I was fine beside him
In the front seat while he drove.
I’d never tried before
To drive a car with a stick shift,
And I didn’t care to learn.
He insisted I could do it
Since he would be my teacher.
Unfortunately, I was not what
One might refer to as a "quick study.”
So we lurched and stopped
And lurched again
On the roads among the flowers.
When it seemed, at last, the ride was smooth,
I turned to my fellow adventurer to say,
“Now, how can I stop this crazy thing?”
Following his instructions,
Not given quite so sweetly as before,
I managed to jerk us to a stop.
There followed a shift in drivers
With a shift in the atmosphere,
Almost as real as the shift in the car,
And we continued smoothly on our way.
Our love proved true, of the never-ending kind,
And we’ve gone on many more adventures,
But never again with me at the wheel
Of a car with a stick-shift drive.
