A rambunctious, self-assured six,
With lots of little-girl moods.
It was Halloween.
And so excited was she
To pick out her own mask.
While other little girls
Would be angels and fairies,
She went for, of all things,
A pigface.
Who knew why?
Certainly not her parents,
Who tactfully directed her
To other choices.
But she would not be moved.
She carried it home proudly
And hung it on the doorknob
Of her bedroom,
Where she could admire it
Whenever she walked by.
Big brother teased
To no effect.
She loved her pigface.
And then came a rebellion
Against her mother
About cleaning her room.
She wanted to play instead.
She declared in angry outburst
She would run away.
Her dad told her to go ahead,
But she had to leave her pigface behind.
Just as he had thought,
She could not bear to.
She stayed and cleaned her room.
Lord, help me not to hold on foolishly
To the pigfaces in my life.
