So many things it might be,
From heaps of golden coins on a pirate ship
To glittering gems under glass in a museum,
Or even a love letter, yellowed with age.
But to a young lad not quite three,
It was something from a story.
He climbed into the family car
And shut the door behind him.
Then when he couldn’t figure out
How to open it again,
He became frightened and began to cry.
His mother opened the door, and
Pulling him into her arms, she told him
She wouldn’t let anything happen to him.
“Don’t you know,” said she,
“You are my treasure?”
At this, he sobbed even harder,
And he mumbled through his tears,
“But I don’t want to be buried treasure.”
She explained to him what treasure means
When it isn’t buried treasure in a story,
But he wasn’t really convinced.
It is my desire to share with others
The treasures of peace and joy
That lie buried within my heart.
