The night hours dragged with fear of discovery and the same fate of their master. Each unknown sound caused them to stiffen with trepidation. Belongings were close at hand for a quick escape.
How could this be? They quietly whispered the remembered promises of new life and a kingdom without end. Reminiscing about the miracles they had seen, repetitious doubts troubled their hearts. Was it just a ruse, a scheme to enrapture their minds that only led to defeat and remorse for wasted time and effort?
Answers were not forthcoming this night. The moon had even hidden and the damp seeped into their bones as they huddled near the small fire. What would the morning bring? The mourning in their hearts overwhelmed their thoughts for the future.
How could life return to the mundane works of the past after such an exciting but conclusive end of the life they had known for the past three years? Fishing for fish couldn’t compare to fishing for men. That heavenly satisfaction seemed to be slipping away as did their hope.
Thoughts turned towards the tomb. Heavily guarded by soldiers and a tremendous stone, there would be no opportunity to go get him. The one who had embalmed his body was rushed out of the tomb before he could finish so he left his linen handkerchief on the prone face.
Encouraging words came from the women of the group. Their eyes, swollen and reddened from weeping, searched for hope in their own words. Remember, they said, remember his words of his return.
But they had never heard of anyone returning from the dead except for the one who had been dead for three days and had to be unwound from his grave clothes. Life returned at the sound of his voice. Silence is all they knew now. Who could raise the one who raised the dead?
A hint of dawn lightened the sky. Sabbath over, the first day of the week was upon them. The women left for the garden while we took turns and watched the roads for signs of soldiers.
Someone ran towards our hiding place. Who was it? Oh, it’s one of the women! What could have happened? Out of breath, she burst into the room.
“He is gone! His grave clothes were still as he was bound but his facecloth was folded nearby. The tomb was empty! He’s alive! I saw him myself!”
As they looked at each other, a glimmer of hope returned to their eyes. Could it be?
