How many meals I’d make,
I had no notion of the count,
Nor for the cakes I’d bake.
I didn’t dream what it would take
To meld two lives as one,
The give and take required of both
For work that’s never done.
I’d no idea on that day
How many floors I’d sweep,
Nor height the stack of dishes washed
If piled up in a heap.
I’d no thought for the hours I’d spend
With babes to walk the floor,
Nor dirty diapers I would change
And change again once more.
The care of children as they grew,
That day I’d not a clue,
But with my husband and God’s help,
I somehow muddled through.
God’s blessed me since I’ve been a bride
And blessed my husband, too,
With love that’s lasted through the years
As though it were brand new.
Yet, knowing now what lay ahead,
As I did not know then,
Were I asked to become that bride,
I’d do it all again.
