“Sin is crouching at your door and you must master it.” The message was as clear as if the Lord were speaking from the passenger seat. Waiting at a red light, I tightened my grip on the wheel as I glanced to check that the car doors were locked. The words seemed so literal.
Block by block, I inhaled and exhaled, practicing to master my breathing and my irritation. I silently repeated the words as I parked and walked up to the church. Sin is crouching at your door and you must master it.
The friendly gray-haired greeter, that I knew only by name, held open the front door. “Welcome! How are you this morning?”
“Sin is crouching at my door and I must master it.” Oops, did I just say that outloud? Her open mouth suggested she didn’t quite know how to respond to me.
Passing through the narthex, an usher held out a bulletin for me and politely asked, “How are you today?”
“Sin is crouching at my door and I must master it.” This unmistakable message still poured from my mouth. Quickly raised eyebrows and startled eyes revealed his confusion as to how to respond. He said nothing.
Still caught up in my own awe at receiving such an explicit message from the Lord, I headed toward my regular pew and sat down next to a woman who had just recently started attending.
“Good morning. How are you?” she asked as I settled in beside her. I doubt she suspected I might actually tell her.
Leaning close, I spoke quietly, “Sin is crouching at my door and I must master it.”
I don’t remember how my pew-mate responded to my whispered confession. I don’t remember what songs we sang that morning. I don't remember the sermon’s message. But I do remember the morning’s stormy grumbling was blown away by the Lord’s personal message. His attention-grabbing words were my rescue.
