“Yep, these computers are taking over,” he continued, using George’s frowned silence as an invitation to provide more distraction, for these contests involved the serious risk of the loser having to buy lunch. Not a good habit to develop, so anything bar cheating was legitimate.
“Skilled workers are being laid off all the time. I mean, if we were younger, we’d be scrapped as well, because these computers whizz through work that used to be so dangerous, or that took forever to do."
George snapped onto the bait. Angrily.
“You’re right Jasper, people just don’t seem to matter anymore. It’s bad enough that computerised bills arrive long after they’ve been paid, but my cousin Mary got one last week that was addressed to Henry. He’s been gone five months now, and all her grief came flooding back. It took so long for me to get through the company call-back line, and actually speak to a real person – who put it down to a computer error. I can assure you, there won’t be any more of those errors.”
Suddenly World Series Checkers stakes faded from Jasper’s priorities. “I’m sorry to hear that, George. It’s hard to be sorry for anyone who’s sent their bank account details to claim lottery wins, or to inherit from wealthy relatives who’ve ever really existed. But I feel for poor Mary. Has she come through okay?”
“She is now,” George replied more calmly, “because her faith is strong. But faith doesn’t take the memories away, and even though she and Henry will see each other again, he leaves a hole in her heart for now.”
His features softened further, as he reached for one of his checkers, and proceeded to mount his own shock move - a zig-zag charge across the board: a charge that increased his own side’s royal family; reduced the opposing black army to a scant two pieces; a step which removed Jasper’s confidence and allowed a quiet smile to drape his own face.
“Old pal, we can feel helpless against the advances of technology, but we are still the targets of God’s love. And whether computers dazzle us or depress us, he’s put incredible computers inside our own heads.
“Can computers do all that our brains can – even if we take longer? Just think of God’s handiwork in creating our brains: to learn, calculate, memorize, speak, feel emotions, have ideas, make plans, form habits, move ourselves around, use tools or equipment and create things.”
“You’re right, George,” replied Jasper, “and that’s only the things we do consciously, because our brains run our bodies – with breathing, blood circulation, our nervous system to sense pain and to bring us through injuries or illnesses.”
“We’ve only touched on what happens on the inside,” added George. “But what about how we stretch out to get to know our families, other workers or friends, and learn how to keep all these relationships in shape – even with friends like you,” he added with a wink.
Their game that day remained unfinished. It no longer seemed all that important. Impulsively, they reached across to shake hands and cede the points to each other.
Their next step was to head for the burger joint and buy each other’s lunch, in the joy and generosity of recognising that the pair of them were computer-surpassing examples of God’s handiwork.
