Does the world seem oh so weary
When tall trees stand like skeletons,
Waving their bare knobby limbs
As they shiver in icy winds,
And grass has faded to a muted brown,
While denuded flower gardens
Lie fallow on crusty soil?
Then gray, somber skies turn pewter
At sun’s efforts to flood with gold,
And playgrounds are silent
With only the echoes
Of children’s shouts and laughter,
As icicles hang from sides of slides
And chains of swings clang
In angry puffs of wind.
Do not linger in the ‘dismals’
As you sit by a roaring fire
And dream of happy yesterdays.
Instead, take heart—
The beauty of the earth will be restored!
Green leaves will decorate skeleton trees
And wave gently In shimmery breezes.
Rich blossoms will appear on trees and shrubs,
And luxurious carpets of velvet grass
Will revive the dry, dead ground.
The aromatic scent of roses and lilacs
Will saturate the air with sweetness,
And flowers of all varieties
Will replace the drabness with color.
Sun’s golden rays will beam
From stretches of bright blue sky.
Playgrounds will once more abound
With the noise of happy children
As they run and play and scream
With the effervescent joy of youth.
Spring is coming!
