I didn’t believe it. Oh, sometimes thought I saw a shadow, an enormous one, in the side reaches of my vision. But I’d look, and it would evaporate as if it had slipped into the dark night. I’d shake my head. Nonsense. I’ve been in these parts for a long time too. Wouldn’t I know it?
But then, there were those times that I’d see parts of a footprint. Clearly human. Clearly enormous. I would brush it off as just my mind playing tricks. Pretty impressive tricks. Still, I’m certain that I’m right. And I carry on. Let them tell their tales.
Until one day, I hear a blood-curdling scream, over and over again, and it reverberates in my brain. It’s human but has an echo that sounds almost feral.
I’m done playing games. I will settle this now. I begin my hunt. Doggedly. Clues along the way keep me on the trail. A broken branch here or the scent of something fetid there. Whatever it is, it stinks. It so permeates the air that my skin and clothes absorb its wretched scent. I gag. I can hardly stand myself.
I go for miles. I exhaust myself and finally run out of steam. But now, I’m not so certain that it’s a mere myth. It feels real but I can’t seem to ever get close enough to see it. I give up.
And then, suddenly, there it is…I see it face to face and it’s more hideous than I could have ever imagined. I recoil in utter disgust, scratching my way backward, fighting to flee as it confronts me. I wish I had never come this way. I run.
James 1:23-25
Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.
