I wonder what this year will hold?
I walked the grounds and noticed Brittany and her team painting more parking lines on the tarmac. Last year, and the one before that, we’d run out of parking spaces. People had parked their cars along the road and walked, some as far as two miles! They were so eager.
I checked in on the bathrooms, one block had just been completed. That was something else we had had to deal with – an increase of people needing to use the facilities. But everything looked pristine.
“Jamie,” I turned and saw my boss, Hank.
“Hey Hank,” I replied as he strode up to me. Tall, perpetually sunburnt and the main organizer, Hank was our de facto leader, a responsibility he took very seriously.
“Hey. Listen. I just heard on the radio that rain is expected in the next 24 hours. Are we ready?”
“As ready as we will ever be,” I said. “The roads will be a nightmare, though.”
Hank laughed, “I know, but people won’t care. They are so eager to get here and experience something fresh and special.”
In companionable silence we walked back to the parking area and the main buildings. Just before we entered, I turned and took one last look at the desert that stretched out in front of us in all directions as far as the eye could see. On the horizon yellow sand glittered bronze as the sun struck it. Suddenly, the promising smell of rain approaching from the Atlantic Ocean assailed my nostrils. And with that smell came the promise of renewal once more.
As the anticipated rains descended on the only desert in the world to experience an annual revival, millions of Namaqualand daisies and other flowers would spring to life for just one month before lying dormant again for the following 11 months.

The Namaqualand daisies are protected by Namaqua National Park, located in Southern Africa. It is often assumed that Park Service employees plant the flowers themselves, but in fact bees and other insects get the credit as they perfectly perform their pollinating duties. Every year the area seems to bear different flowers, and it's always quite an intrigue, and surprise for the Park Service employees themselves.
