for a short vacation
as if he can escape a pandemic
for a few days.
I say, “Have a safe trip.”
But he doesn’t understand
my acquired language of mother-speak,
only the heart comprehends,
that translates:
I will be praying with every breath
that you don’t have a car accident,
that you don’t catch Covid,
you don’t drink too much,
trip and crack your skull,
you don’t get bitten by a mosquito
carrying a disease,
or fall into the black hole.
“Have a nice time!”
translates: praying you
see God’s mirror in the endless ocean
and the cerulean painted sky,
hear Him in the feathered wind
as it stirs up scents of crisp leaves,
apple and pumpkin spice,
and feel His Spirit in the golden foliage,
lining the highways
as a fence on fire to spark your soul,
revive any fizzled faith,
and you’ll thank Him for the sand
He has numbered
and the stars He has named.
I suggest he takes a pack of
“Just the Basics” disinfecting wipes.
Just in case. They could prevent
something terrible. I will feel better
if he disinfects everything he touches,
everything that could invade his heart.
I cannot cradle him
or bandage his wounds with a kiss.
But he doesn’t take the wipes from my hands,
and says he won’t need them.
As the door shuts,
his “Bye. See you Sunday. Love you.”
echoes. I put the wipes away
and remember Jesus cleaned
with water and love.
