Had we traveled on that late October day
As we journeyed to the coast of Oregon.
So tired of the many hours
The we’d been inside the car,
I was ready to get out and stretch my legs.
Yet even more than that,
Our breakfast had been hours ago,
And I was eager for a tasty, sit-down meal.
My husband patted my knee and said,
“Just a little bit farther
We’ll come to a fair-sized town, and
You can begin to look for a good place to eat.”
As we approached the edge of town,
I began to scan both sides of the road
For a restaurant with appeal,
But not a single glimmer of one did I find.
For every single fast-food place we saw,
I’d mutter, “Let’s go a little bit farther,”
Till finally, he turned to me and said,
“We’re almost out of town now,
And there’s not another soon.
Here’s a place for a hamburger,
And I’m afraid we won’t see anymore.”
So we quickly ate our burgers and fries
And were on our way again.
Then when we’d traveled just a little bit farther,
We came upon a lovely restaurant.
Sometimes it pays to keep on going
Just a little bit farther.
