It is hard to tune into a news channel and not be depressed. When I think of the unrest and anger boiling up in the actions of so many people right now, I am reminded of our time in Vanuatu when we visited Mt. Yasur on Tanna Island. Mt. Yasur is an active volcano. Our group rode over rugged roads and across a desolate ash plain to get a close-up view of the raging inferno. From our standpoint we could see the flames leaping to the surface, and glowing rocks and small boulders were thrust upward toward the sky. Every few minutes we could hear a whooshing sound emitted from the depths of the earth that gave me an ‘other worldly’ feeling. It was definitely a place of turmoil.
The experience reminded me of another mountain, introduced in the Book of Exodus. God wanted to speak to the Israelites. He made an appointment with them at the foot of Mt. Sinai. When the day came and they assembled there “smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, the whole mountain trembled violently, and the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder...When the people saw the thunder and the lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear.” That is when they implored Moses to just tell them what God said rather than have God speak to them Himself. I can’t say that I blame them!
There is another mountain mentioned in the Bible that will experience tumultuous turmoil in the future. That mountain is the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem’s Old City. Jesus spent a good amount of time there. It is the location where He ascended back to Heaven. Zechariah prophesied that a day is coming when the LORD’s “feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south.” This event will be followed by Jesus taking His place as king over the whole earth, and peace will reign. What a time that will be. It is my understanding that not only will people be at peace, but the whole animal kingdom will be at peace with each other and mankind.
As I watch current events play out, I can’t help but cry out along with the Apostle John, “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.”
NIV Exodus 19:18, 19 and Exodus 20:18, Zechariah 14:4, Revelation 22:20
