ADD TO MY FAVORITES
Like big girls, every night.
I couldn’t wait to start to school
To learn to read and write.
I couldn’t wait for spring to come
And summers, filled with play,
To be outside with all my friends
Through each new summer day.
I couldn’t wait for high-school years
When I’d be almost grown
And closer to the later date
I’d be out on my own.
I couldn’t wait to graduate
And go away to college
With hours to spend in studying
To fill my head with knowledge.
I couldn’t wait to marry
When I met my special “one.”
The wedding seemed to far away,
I thought it would not come.
I couldn’t wait to start to work
With teaching my vocation,
And then I couldn’t wait each year
For summertime vacation.
I couldn’t wait to hold our babes,
The first one, then the other.
A wondrous blessing in my life
Has been to be a mother.
I couldn’t wait to see our kids
Grow up to their potential.
To show God’s love and pray for them
Was for us most essential.
I couldn’t wait to end my job
And start retirement.
The free time writing poetry
Were peaceful hours spent.
I couldn’t wait till grandkids came
When we were so excited,
And when our own kids had grandkids,
We greatly were delighted.
I couldn’t wait down through the years
For changing seasons’ weather,
But through all kinds, with my sweetheart,
We’d joy to be together.
The Lord’s been with me all along,
Through each wait after wait.
I’m waiting now until the day
We meet at heaven’s gate.
