And as he waited, he sojourned by faith,
Claiming territory with the soles of his feet,
An inheritance for numberless descendants
For whom He prayed and trusted and hoped against hope,
While Sarai’s empty arms and laughter mocked.
Moses waited.
And as he waited, he tended his sheep
A disgraced ex-prince learning humble leadership,
While growing old under Yahweh’s silent sky,
Learning the art of leading stubborn, foolish ones
Through a wasteland and, as it seemed, wasted years.
Joseph waited.
And as he waited, he honored his God
By serving well, a slave more to God than to man,
A prisoner who toiled to bless his oppressors,
A dreamer walking blamelessly past buried hopes,
And glorifying God when dead dreams rose.
David waited.
And as he waited, he fought God’s foes,
And fought the urge to rise against God’s anointed.
He wrote the songbook for every generation
While his promised crown adorned his tormenter’s head,
And he sheltered in bat-infested caves.
Jesus waited.
And while He waited, He toiled, obscure,
And then served, taught, healed, and fulfilled all righteousness,
Longing for the time He could say, “It is finished.”
He waits again, now preparing our wedding feast,
And a home where we’ll walk with Him in white.
Now we, too, wait.
