Out of breath he flung himself down alongside the deep, winding river. “I think it’s really over,” he panted, chest heaving as he drew in lungfuls of fresh air. As soon as he heard the news he had to make sure it was real, but now, after seeing the evidence for himself, he could believe, and finally rest.
He rolled over, his face to the sun, and slowly the melodic singing of the birds, the soft gurgle of the water as it toyed with the rocks on its way to the ocean, and the fragrance of the wildflowers in bloom permeated his senses. Thoughts danced through his mind, some as elusive as the fireflies he used to try and catch on his father’s farm, others more solidified; and it was those he wanted to ban, but how? The memories seemed to be etched in his conscious and sub-conscious. How do I move on? How can I forget?
He knew at some point he’d have to leave the sanctuary of the meandering river and its lush banks. He would have to return to the city and take on the responsibilities that now awaited him, but still he lay in the grass, eyes squinting at the blueness of the sky and the sun’s brilliance. I will wait for the Lord to speak. That never fails.
So still he lay an intruder could be forgiven for thinking he was asleep. He heard the gentle rustling of the wind lightheartedly played with the long reeds that fringed the river’s edge. In the distance the sound of baaing and the shepherd calling his sheep put a smile on his lips.
My life is about to change, he thought. I wish things hadn’t ended like they had. I’m sorry for everyone and everything. But God, you showed yourself faithful to Your Word, and to me.
As David sat up and dusted himself off, he was reminded of an ancient quatrain he’d learnt from his father, Jesse; where God helped the blameless and pure. Before he knew it the words literally sang as they left his mouth:
2 Samuel 22:26-27 (NLT) To the faithful you show yourself faithful; to those with integrity you show integrity. To the pure you show yourself pure, but to the crooked you show yourself shrewd.
Devious King Saul, who had tried so many times in the past to kill David, was dead.
