To see if I could find
The churches from my history
I’d hidden in my mind.
Such a great number I recalled
From buildings, framed in white,
To grand, imposing sanctuaries
With spires bathed in light.
While some held the roughest of benches,
And others had fine pews,
In each I sat to listen to
The glorious Good News.
I saw myself a little child
With joy in Sunday School,
When through the songs and stories there,
I learned the Golden Rule.
In all the churches journeyed to
Were prayers and testimonies,
The consecrations of new life,
And farewell ceremonies.
I cherish in my deepest heart
The altar where I tarried
To seek God’s presence in my life,
And later I was married.
A treasure found in every one
Was in the songs we sang,
The grandest of the dear old hymns
When bells of heaven rang.
