To announce that day is finished.
Sun has turned out the light to slip
Silently away as her shadows
Follow closely behind her.
The birds, having sung sweet good nights,
Nestle quietly in their nests.
Mournful voices of hound dogs
Bay, without stopping to take a breath,
To the new moon as it crests.
Mama has put away her apron
While only the scents of supper remain.
The little ones, with story time over,
Along with nighttime prayers,
Are snuggled sound asleep in their beds.
Papa, his long workday ended,
Is settled comfortably in his easy chair.
With his shoes off and sock feet
Resting on the worn footstool,
He watches flickering images on TV.
Though there may be many similar,
This day cannot be repeated by anyone.
Every word and action or failure to act
Is written in God’s great book
For a final reckoning in That Day.
