It has come to my attention that I have become an old man. My grandson made that clear when he tried to guess my age and thought purhaps it was somewhere around 273 years old. I took no offence because he has only recently learned how to count. But it got me to thinking... what has my long life accomplished? That is a question I could easily use as a weapon of mass destruction in my own self-image. The child I once was had dreams of solving all the world's problems. I solved none. I was going to write the greatest novels ever read by mankind. I wrote none. So I would at least be the greatest husband and father ever to exist. I even failed at that.

So what has my old life produced? The years have at least brought me some clarity about that particular question. My life has produced no more and no less than yours has. My life (and yours) has produced a symphony in God's songbook, to be played for all eternity with all the other symphonies of His creation. Each moment of my life becomes a note of that song. All the love, all the desires, all the pains and sorrows of my life are gathered together in a vivid variety of vibrant memories. Then the Master carefully places each note in the right place on his song sheet of grace and it becomes a sweet symphony, played grandly as I pass into eternity.

My symphony, I know, will have moments I would rather not include, but Lord, please don't remove them. You taught me, you comforted me, you held me throughout all those moments. My song would never be what you have made it had I not known those moments. In the symphony you have made of my life even the sad moments resonate in harmony with every other moment to become the sweetest song I have ever heard.

So, Lord, take my life such as it is and compose your symphony. Then take the music of every other life and let the music play. In the end we will see what you have done. You have written the song every created being will someday sing. All the saved on earth will gather with the angels in heaven to sing God's wonderful master symphony of praise. And praise God, we will have it to sing for all eternity.
