to take care
of the garden of my soul
and let it lie in ruins
and apathy
Gates fallen apart remain unshut
doors now creak
from below unruly creepers
lunge out
like escaped prisoners
plants unattended
wild grass and flowers
grow and spread like wild fires
and run riots against once admired plants
The barn in ruins
full of webs and nests
tools in disrepair
rusty nails, broken pots
disused watering cans
So are the leaky faucets
that won’t work
with burst pipes
what holey
water hoses and tubes
Greenish mouldy walls
Lichened drains
strewn with mud and leaping frogs
small crawling creatures
roaming freely without cares or worries
No wonder
the toads
at night come alive
in their choir
bellowing out unique voices
Interlopers like stray cats
rodents garden snails
and occasional snakes
found refuge in the place
once a well-kept garden
Neighbours
left and right
come harping
on the worried
and sorrow state
Would I be ashamed
when the Master Gardener
returns
to see such pathetic
state and ruins
