Maria sat and rocked, a knitted shawl
Wrapped tightly around her aching shoulders.
Sad and lonely, she mused
Of happier days lived long ago.
She was young again, and in her dreams,
Springtime was approaching,
The season for Creator God
To make the world brand new.
She saw pansies that had lain shivering
Beneath a heavy blanket of snow
Lift their purple faces to the sun
As bold tulips stood guard over them.
Bright yellow forsythia waved in the breeze
To entice drowsy bees nosing around them.
Honeysuckle vines and lilac bushes vied
To see which had the sweeter scent.
Birds twittered cheeriest of songs
As they darted back and forth
Building nests for their growing families.
Hummingbirds and swallows flew in
From their faraway winter homes,
And ducks stopped to rest in ice-melted ponds.
Bare trees became lovely bowers once more,
And beautiful blossoms burgeoned
From reawakened dogwood and cherry trees.
Suddenly she awakened in surprise
To find herself in a place of indescribable beauty,
Far beyond her remembrances of spring.
Here she would have no more pain nor be sad and lonely,
But rejoice forever in the presence of the Lord.
