Completely unadorned,
Does soft rain gently whisper,
“Leaf out in curtain of green.”
She murmurs to the fruit trees
To bear harbinger blossoms,
And she sighs to autumn’s buried bulbs,
“Bring blooms of brilliant color
For garb of winter-gone.”
To lawns, long time lain dormant,
She showers her suggestions
That they become lush carpets.
With constant pitter-patter,
She announces, “Spring is here."
The surly sister of soft rain
Arrives with thunderous voice,
“Beware, prepare, take care—
Destruction is at hand.”
She pounds the ground
With frenzied force
On barely budding flowers
And pelts new growth on trees and shrubs
To drench their tender shoots.
She floods fresh lawns with outpourings
From her torrential supply,
Till rescue is, at last, at hand
With sunshine’s healing rays.
The family of rain may seem to be
More than a bit capricious,
But ultimately, nature’s control
Is part of the power of God.
