Israel had got itself in trouble.
The Philistine army had come up from the south
With Goliath as their mouth.
For six weeks on end,
He continued to extend -
To any Israelite -
A generous offer to fight:
“If I beat him,
For you it will be grim;
You’ll all become slaves
Till your dying days!
But if he beats me,
We’ll all happily be
Your servants!”
“No chance!”
The Israelites concurred
With no further word.
Encamped in the Valley of Elah,
The Israelites wished he were far
Away from them,
For he was a huge problem.
At the sight of his spear,
They were filled with fear.
But that’s not all –
He was ten feet tall!
By the way,
Could I say
I have no doubts
That NBA talent scouts
Would beat a path to his tent
With offers sufficient
To set him up for life -
Away from any wars or strife
But then young David took
A trip to the Elah brook,
Where he heard this rant
From the Philistine giant.
“He’s too big to hit!” his countrymen said,
“If we take him on, we’ll end up dead!”
David’s reply
Challenged that lie:
“Too big to hit?
Not as I see it!
Just listen to this –
I reckon he’s too big to miss!”
To be brave he could afford;
Since hearing about the reward.
If he killed the Philistine,
He would be in the succession line!
For King Saul would provide
His daughter as a bride!
For David, this was a huge thing –
For he’d been anointed as Israel’s next king –
He suddenly sensed God’s hand,
Though nobody else could understand…
But when he went to see Saul,
Saul said, “This guy will maul
You to death!”
But barely pausing for breath,
David explained his skills;
Relating his kills
Against both lion and bear.
Yet he had more to say,
“Your majesty, today
All Israel will see
God’s victory!”
King Saul gaped,
And then draped
The boy with his armour.
“You’re still just a boy farmer,
While Goliath’s a career soldier –
And so much oldier.
That’s the simple truth,
Because you’re only a youth.”
But though Saul offered his best,
David was unimpressed.
He didn’t feel too great
Beneath all that weight,
“It doesn’t fit!
Let me hit
That uncircumcised creep
With how I’ve protected our sheep!”
So he showed Saul his sling:
“I’ll defeat him with this thing!”
He hurried down to the brook,
From where five stones he took,
And ran forward to take on the hunk from Gath,
Who was filled with wrath:
“You’re just a kid!” the veteran roared.
“But I represent the Lord!”
Came David’s calm reply
As he came nigh.
“No more words,
You’re food for the birds!”
Yelled Goliath -
Who still relieth
On his proven brute force.
With no trace of remorse.
But David loaded his sling
And did begin to swing
The first stone,
Which flew all alone
To strike Goliath’s temple.
And the result was simple.
After that hit on the head,
He dropped to the ground – dead!
The Israelites roared
As David seized the huge sword
To remove its owner’s head.
While Philistines just up and fled!
A slightly poetic author’s note:
I have surmised
Why Goliath was surprised,
For in all his experience of war;
Nothing like that had ever entered his head before… 😉
