I’ve battled unhealthy eating for years. The Urge is to eat all the time. Food is like a siren song, singing a lie that raiding the refrigerator will satisfy my longings.
The Urge often sneaks up when I sit in my chair to relax. It pursues me when I try to dismiss it from my thoughts. Worse, it calls me with promises to soothe my soul when I’m feeling discouraged. Immediately a war is waged — will it capture me or will I take it captive?
My nemesis tells me I need food, now! And lots of it. More times than I care to admit, The Urge wins as it calls me to binge. I enter the kitchen and fill a plate, promising myself when it is empty I will be done. I go to my favorite place of comfort, my chair, and devour the plate of food as though I’m starving. My thoughts are on what to eat next. As soon as my plate is empty I will refill and continue the binge. I’ll stuff my body, knowing that when I am satiated my stomach will hurt and my heart will ache because I have done this to myself, again.
Overeating has messed up my body to the point that I don’t recognize or pay attention to signals it gives, telling me I am full. Even though I know binge eating will not solve problems or change anything for the better, The Urge is like a drug—addictive. A mental battle ensues as it continues to beckon relentlessly.
Time to boycott The Urge! This nonsense needs to stop. God’s Word urges me to remember that whatever I eat or drink, to do for the glory of God. That is the urging I want to follow. There is no glory to God when I mindlessly shovel food into my mouth, imagining it will satisfy some hunger.
Satisfaction comes from following the example Jesus set by being obedient to His Father and by my remembering his Spirit lives within me. God’s Word tells me “the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”
Because I have been raised from death to life in Christ Jesus, I have resurrection power over The Urge. Nevertheless, it has grabbed hold of me, trying to become a stronghold in my life, pretending to more powerful than God.
It’s time to fight! Dukes up! Take that, and that, you lying nemesis.
The weapons my Lord and Savior has given me to fight with have the power to demolish strongholds that set itself up against the knowledge of Christ. I will use the sword of Truth to fight against my nemesis.
The battle will be won. Nothing can win against Christ’s obedience. I’m not so naive as to believe there won’t be setbacks, but the One who is in me is greater than the who is in the world. I will shun The Urge, turning my thoughts to Jesus, the one who has captured my heart and mind—and defeated my nemesis.

The strength of being baptized into Christ for the forgiveness of sin and being given the gift of the Holy Spirit and relying on God's promises should go a long way in any person's life.
