It was Bella’s look that took me on a trip that day My new rescue dog has been with us three months now, but still flinches with rapid blinking, if there is any jerky, awkward movement I make too close to her face. It breaks my heart to witness.
She obviously has encountered past abuse, and I am hoping to gain her trust slowly. She is safe with me, but does not yet understand. I told her how much I love her, and she is safe here. She looks at me with those dog eyes, that long to understand. The wall between our worlds seems to be impossible to eradicate.
That was my invitation to a journey far away, and yet as close as my own heartbeat. I heard His voice inside, and saw it with my spirit. I am just like her. I flinch just thinking about closeness to God, trusting Him daily, following Him, obeying Him. I too have built a wall that has become a hindrance to intimacy I so long for.
He is safe, and yet I enter into His presence fearfully, and guarded as if I’m about to be admonished. He knows my thoughts and even the hairs of my head are counted, and instead of blessing me, that truth freezes me in fear.
When Bella automatically flinches, it’s because she doesn't really know me yet. Not well enough. Not intimately. Knowing me and trusting me will stop that habit. But she has to surrender, relax, and trust to really know that I am safe. Whoa. This trip is enlightening, as His truth strikes me.
The trip from being self-centered, defensive, and fearful to total surrender? It’s the longest, hardest, most rewarding and yet most beautifully freeing trip possible in this life. He waits for me. From walking in the flesh in my soulish realm, into His presence, surrounded by His Kingdom, is the trip of a lifetime I can make every day.
I must choose to go. I must put aside time to do it. I don't have to change first, but come as I am, since He already knows me. He understands the wall is my delusion of protection, that I think I need. When He becomes my focus, I stop flinching, and something new happens.
The wall seems to be slowly disintegrating. Every time I spend time with Him, just in the quiet and stillness of His presence, I sense some of the bricks are falling down, in slow motion, as I start to know Him in a different light.
I can share with others this new trip I took, and they are inspired, because it is Truth. From lies to Truth. I can have many more trips like this when I take the time . Make Him my priority. And go for the gold.
There are no pictures on my phone to put on Facebook, and my bank account is not touched, but I love these trips into His world and out of this one. When it’s about Him. Yearning for Him. Wanting more of Him. Seeking Him. Needing His wisdom. Listening for His voice. Asking Him for His peace. Seeking His protection.
Ahhh… Yes, I am a traveller. I never want to stop going places from here to there with the Shepherd of my heart.
