“Why did I do it?” Immediate doubt induces heart palpitations and sweaty palms.
“Pastor Mark said to reach out to someone for Jesus...that's why.”
I glance down at the screen; Kelly; today 3:45 PM; delivered.
The words “Do U know Jesus?” stare back at me. It's now 3:50 and no response from Kelly.
My eyelids fearfully fold into my lower lashes and my saliva sticks in gritty clumps to my throat. “What if she blocks me?” Heaviness heaves in my chest.
Vibrations reverberate across my palm.
I don't want to open my eyes. Do I really want to be the crazy Jesus freak friend?
I repeat Pastor Mark's words from last night. “In Matthew, it says to go and make disciples and in Psalms, we are told God will satisfy our hungry soul with what is good.”
The quivers come again, but tranquility washes over me as I continue to repeat Pastor Mark's words.
”Don't be afraid because Jesus is always with you.”
“It's up to us to feed the Word to others so they can find eternal satisfaction for their soul.”
Fear dissipates, but doubt creeps close. I pray. “I need your strength, Jesus.”
Another vibration. This time the sensation electrifies me with anticipation, so I look.
It's Kelly; 3:54 P.M. “Not really. Y? Do U?” A series of confused emoji faces follow.
Fist pump with a happy dance. She wasn't totally flipped out.
My fingers fly across the phone pad. “Yes- it's changed my life...smoothies? My treat. Park-30 m. U N?” I add a happy face emoji and 100% emoji for good measure and hit send.
Thumb hovering above the button I pray the verse like Pastor Mike taught us at Bible study. “Lord, show me how to make a disciple of Kelly. Give her a hunger for your word and a wanting to obey all your commands. I can't wait to see her baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”
Maybe it wasn't as good as Pastor Mike's prayer, but I'm pretty sure it was good enough to bend Jesus' ear.
Sporadic laughter interrupts the memory and I refocus to see Pastor Mike give me a thumbs up. He swiftly baptizes Kelly and, as she emerges, I see her wipe droplets, along with a few tears, from her face.
The magnitude of the moment causes my own tears to dribble down my cheeks; one more soul is promised a spot at the table. I love to imagine all the saints at the heavenly feast watching and waiting for the Prince of Peace to take His seat next to the Father. Now we can add Kelly and wouldn't it be great if she was sitting right next to me?
