“Michael, I can’t take this anymore.”
“You can’t take it? What about me, Jenny? I’m the one that’s stuck with your constant nagging and trying to change me. Isn’t it enough that I had to drop out of college to work a full time job just because you ended up having a kid that neither one of us wanted yet? Give me a break.”
Give him a break? What about me, the ‘kid’. Neither one of them wanted me? What's a baby suppose to do with that kind of information? If I could I would just leave home right now and get out of their way, but, get real, I can’t even change my own diaper yet. Believe me, I really wish I could right now. If I can't do even that simple thing, what chance would I have of holding down a job or cooking or... anything? Maybe it would help if I cry a little louder.
“Don’t throw that at me, Michael. We were in trouble long before that baby came into the house.”
“So why did you marry me?”
Good question, Daddy. But not the one you should be asking right now. You should be asking 'who is going to change the baby's diaper this time?'
“Why did I marry you? You were the fancy preacher’s son. I thought you would be a good husband. I guess you were just wearing a Christian mask.”
Now you might be getting somewhere, Mommy. It's not a mask, though. It's bandages from him beating himself up all the time. I've watched him in front of the mirror talking about how worthless he is... but Mommy, he isn't worthless. I know. I've heard his love when he talks to me.
“Why throw that in my face? Do you think being a preacher's kid makes me holy?”
“Well, you seemed to fit the part before we got married.”?
Seemed to fit? How do you 'seem' to fit? Either you fit or you don't. Daddy just needs to rev up what he believes deep down. Mommy, you do, too.
“I'm sorry, Jenny. I can't live up to that kind of life. We went to church for awhile. Wasn't that enough?”
Um... Daddy... even I know that isn't enough. I can see right now what I need to do. I need to pray since you guys aren't.
“Michael, I just want something more stable than we have had recently. Church wasn't such a bad thing. I felt a real peace there. Why can't we at least keep that part of our lives going?”
“How would that help? We still can't keep from tearing each other down.”
“Well, then, Michel, maybe we should just call it quits.”
Woe, Mommy. That is the very thing you should not do. Pray, Mommy. Pray.
“I hate to say it, Jenny, but, maybe you're right. This way of living isn't good for either one of us.”
Come on, Guys. The way you are talking isn't good for any of us. Dear God, my Mommy and Daddy need to hear from you. Can you help me with this? I try to talk to them but they don't understand my baby language yet. Please, help us.
“If that is what you really want, then it's over. But Michael, will you do just one thing for me first?”
“Like what, Jenny?”
“Can we at least pray about it... together? Let's get God involved with this decision.”
Oh, thank you, Lord. I like what I am hearing now. They are praying. You will show them the way to save their marriage. So, I'll do my part and give them a few more minutes of quiet and then... can someone please change my diaper before I get a rash?
