When an ordinary day is interrupted by trauma, every ordinary day afterwards can become suspect.
There was no warning, no prophetic dream, no intuitive feeling in my gut that things were about to happen… suddenly.
I’m on a freeway doing mundane chores and out of the corner of my eye, a car is sideways moving towards me, out of control.
I have no time to scream , to brake, or even swerve to miss it, and yet, time seems to stand still. My thoughts are slow-mo … “I can’t die today. We are moving tomorrow. I can’t be maimed either. My family needs me.” There is no sound, as if I’m in a tunnel. I am weightless flying upside down. I see only white. Like a white-out blizzard.
Is this Jesus? Uh oh. He just disappeared. That’s odd.
Still in my seatbelt, but upside down apparently in a ditch, I plead for Jesus to help me.
“Please help me.”
Is this car about to burst into flames while I'm trapped inside? What am I supposed to do? The door is caved in.
“Please help me.”
I hear someone speaking through my screams. A woman’s voice. So beautiful and serene, there was music in her tone, and comfort in her words. How can anyone be in my car? It is coming from behind my left ear.
“Calm down. You are going to be fine. Im going to help you out of here. Move your arms and legs first to see if there are broken bones.”
No nothing seems to be broken. I'm trapped. Where is the fear Im so accustomed to? Panic is being replaced by a knowing God hears me.
It’s her reassuring, dreamlike voice. Her unwavering peace is surrounding me, and my spirit knowing she is in control and I am not alone.
I’m guessing she is a nurse whose car had stopped behind the horrific scene. She will show me how to get out of here
Suddenly, I'm now sitting on the side of the sloping ditch, looking at my car and the car I hit upside down, and no woman ever appeared. How did I get out of the car? It’s strange I do not know how I got out. Where did she go?
I’m surrounded by a knowing and power as the first responders are puzzled that I am not injured, and somehow was able to get out of the car.
I have to tell them loudly, boldly. “It’s the power of God. That’s all I can say. The woman He sent to help me has disappeared.”

“But Nana you told me that happened over 20 years ago. I’m confused about why freeways still freak you out, and you have to sit in the back seat when Papa is driving?
Wasn’t that a story about how God protected you that day?
If that was an angel, why are you so still scared? Remember you thought the air bag exploding was Jesus and then He disappeared, and you were worried? You said God protected you because it wasn't your time yet.”
“Well, honey, it’s called Post- Traumatic- Stress -Syndrome, and it happens when we suffer a sudden trauma as I did. Every time I see tire marks on the freeway, I picture the accident I was in as if it was yesterday. And it causes a flight or fight response in my body that feels like panic.”
“Oh. I guess I’m confused though. . So, if God did all that, didn’t that wipe away the fear?? God was with you.”
“Hmmmm…. You are right, dear. Let me think a moment. I need to ponder what you just said. You have posed a very convicting question to me.
Why am i choosing to focus on the trauma instead of His protection? I’m old now, but still a work in progress. God gives us a choice about which voice inside our head to focus on. And there are times I choose the wrong voice.
Satan’s loud roar in my mind sometimes is all I hear but God’s voice is still, calm, quiet and reassuring. Like the invisible lady. Let’s pray for each other to hear His voice over the lies of the enemy. We are in this battle for our minds as long as we live here. Thank you sweet grand- daughter for bringing home God’s simple truth to me.
He is always with us.”
