she was stretched to the limit
of her ability to hold on.
The song that played repeatedly
in the back of her mind was one
of desertion, of loss, of pain.
She was nagged by the idea
that there was something
she might have done
to prevent what had occurred.
She attempted to hide her own grief
from her children, who looked up
at her with red-rimmed eyes.
With trembling lips,
she spoke calming words to them
while wondering how she would possibly
carry alone all the burdens,
resting heavily on her lone shoulders.
Like a light shining into her darkness
came the words from Scripture,
“I will never leave you nor forsake you,”
and though she knew the road ahead
held many difficulties to stumble through,
some known and some yet to be discovered,
she realized she was not alone.
The tension that had gripped her
eased ever so slightly
when she recalled the truth
that the God of all the world,
and especially of her life,
was with her still.
Her Lord and Savior, who loved her
with a never-changing love,
would lead and guide her,
and at the same time,
always walk beside her.
