Thirty-nine Septembers.
That’s how many years from Casual Chaos to Organized Order I’ve traveled.
I’ve visited the promised land of Ducks-in-Rows. I’ve just never inhabited it.
But I’ve journeyed.
Thirty-nine times.
It typically begins with a realization that summer flounce and linger is a shadowland. A mirage in the desert of productivity and adulthood. Responsible people have routines.
Route Ine…the main highway to Success City…or so I’ve been told.
I’ve plotted and planned my course with brainstorms of Frankensteinian proportions.
I’ve researched and read the best ways to approach productivity for my peculiar personality.
I’ve strategized and schemed on how to overcome the inevitable roadblocks and detours.
I’ve filed and tabbed my way though the Mountains of Paperwork.
I’ve tasted the lemony zest of a clean desk top first thing in the morning.
I’ve pulled into the Rest Stop of a Fully Crossed Off List late at night.
But all this is fleeting. Like passing through an interesting city on your way to the final destination. It’s fun, educational, and stimulating but not IT.
I see IT on the horizon. Just around the next corner. Immediately over the next hill.
IT is: Colour coordinated files. Book shelves Dewy-Decimaled. Desk gleaming polish. Pens mighty swords. Pencils sharp witted. Erasers unnecessary. Dust banished. Meals planned. Cupboards full. Clothes hung in families. Laundry basket empty. Drawers systemized. Windows oracles. Light fixtures beacons. Bathroom a fragrant haven. And the fridge…oh the usual cesspool of science fiction horror…the fridge, friendly.
And I am: Fitness Guru Level, Dependable On-timer, Princess Prepared-in-Advance, Wife Extraordinaire, Mother of all Possibilities, Sibling of Mailed-on-Time-Special-Occasion-Cards, Queen of Holiday Advance-Designers, Eagle Scout, and Seal Team ready for anything.
Throughout this thirty-nine year pilgrimage each of these spectres have become a reality.
Temporary, to be honest, but still I have yanked each wispy vision down from heavenly grandeur and forced it into momentary molecularity.
Never all at once, mind you.
That would be a nirvana too great for this flawed mortal to administer.
But I’ve visited this land of Symmetrical Systems, Achieved Aspirations, and Unrivaled Utopia. I’ve just never dug in.
You see routine rots my brain. Predictability poisons spontaneity. Continuous order causes chaotic compulsions.
Ultimately bohemian shouts beat my ear drum. Maverick echoes disturb form and structure far beneath the surface of touch, taste, sound, sight, and scent. On a cellular level I carry libertine inklings of gypsy blood.
Sometime during the winter I flee the Prison of Perfectionism.
Usually at night.
On a back road.
Yet the dream lingers, laying dormant like a cryogenic corpse.
It requires three seasons to fully thaw.
And when the synaptic roadway is complete, once more I begin to crave life in the promised land of Ducks-in-Rows.
