When inspiration seized me,
But when I read the words aloud,
They really didn’t please me.
It seemed somehow, the rhyme was forced,
The rhythm, not first-rate.
No lover of good poetry
Could this appreciate.
Descriptions were not true to life,
Quite drab, without dimension.
To write a thing as dull as that
Had not been my intention.
But most of all, there was no heart,
No reason to say “Aah,”
Just words in a poetic form
Strung all together—blah!
So back I went to try again
And see what I might fashion,
Then searched my mind to find a thought
For which to show some passion.
It didn’t matter now to me
If lines were rhythmical.
I wrote with true emotion, and
My heart danced through it all.
In nature’s beauty all around,
Examples did I find
Of imagery to reveal
And touch the reader’s mind.
I truly hope my second try
Some joyfulness will bring,
And those who read that verse of mine
Will hear the poem sing.
