“Well?” Tony finally asked as he looked up at her.
“Well what?” Fiona responded.
“Did you notice anything?”
Fiona looked around and then up. “I noticed the thirty helium happy birthday balloons on the ceiling. Some kid’s mom must have been really annoyed when they got away.”
“Oh, not that.”
Fiona scanned Tony for a moment. “Got it. You’ve got your black Tommy HIlfigger shirt which you only wear to special occasions and you got a haircut.”
“Thanks for noticing, but no. Something else.”
“Okay, I noticed that the U-Grill has 50 people in line, the Burger Joint has twenty and the Happy Noodle has none.”
“No, I’m not talking about over there. Did you notice anything about your burger?”
Fiona took another bite and tried to analyze the texture and taste of the greasy, mushy mash in her mouth.
Tony didn’t wait. “Do you remember when I took you up the mountain and we saw the sunset?”
Fiona swallowed. “When you said, ‘Man that guy can paint!”
Tony fidgeted with his phone again. “Yeah, well I almost asked you a question.”
Fiona quickly took another bite and stared at Tony.
Tony looked down and mumbled. “You know how you’ve almost been my best friend for the last five years?”
“Six!” Fiona corrected as she took another bite of burger and then wiped the sauce from her fingers.
Tony thumbed through a gallery of pictures and then slid the phone over to Fiona. The one on the screen was Fiona and Tony dressed up outside a church as the bride and groom emerged from the doors behind them.
“You know how we talked after the wedding about how commitment seems to be such a hard thing for people in our generation?”
“Yeah.”
“Well, I almost asked you a similar question then.”
“Okay.” Fiona shoved the last of the burger into her mouth and waited.
“Did you find the question?” Tony asked, pawing through the pile of wrappings and discarded containers in front of them.
“What question?”
“The question I asked the burger guy to put inside your hamburger.”
“You put the question inside my hamburger?” Fiona felt for her throat. “I ate it.”
“You ate the paper?”
“I didn’t even notice the paper. What kind of normal person puts paper in a hamburger?”
“That’s what the burger guy asked me.”
Fiona stood to her feet and felt for her throat again. “I think I’m going to be sick.”
Tony stood up and reached out. “Just wait a minute. Please give me another chance. This is a question I’ve wanted to ask you for years.”
Fiona flopped on her seat. “Did you at least bring something to go with the question?”
“What kind of something?”
“Listen, I am not going home to my mom telling her that you took me out to a greasy burger joint and asked me the question in front of a hundred strangers and then not have anything to prove it.”
“Do you want me to write out the question on a napkin?”
Fiona folded her arms across her chest and glared. “Tony Simons, you have not asked me one direct question out of that mouth of yours in six years. I want to hear it.”
Tony picked up his phone again and thumbed through a few more pictures. “It’s kind of personal,” he said.
“Of course, it’s personal,” Fiona responded. “It’s about my whole life.”
“Have you ever been asked this before?”
“Are you kidding me? I wouldn’t be hanging around waiting on you for six years if someone else had asked.”
Tony thumbed through his phone again. “My friend, Eddie found a cool way to say it. Let me show you his way first.” He slid the phone across and Fiona picked it up.
She frowned. “What kind of question is this?” she asked.
“It’s kind of the question.”
“Have I ever wanted to dance my way through life with Jesus? Is the question you want to ask me?”
Tony fidgeted. “Well, I’d probably say it a little differently.”
Fiona stood and threw Tony’s phone across the Food Court. “You waited six years to ask me about Jesus?” She walked away.
