So, when the Holy Spirit began convicting me it was time to witness to her, I knew I had to get my point across quickly; before she could interject her comments or objections.
Rosie is a wonderful sister, and she goes to church. In the past when I've talked to her about accepting Jesus, she's responded with a list of her good deeds and her donations to the church's mission projects. She just doesn't get it, and in the past she hasn't been willing to listen.
This afternoon, I was determined to say what was on my heart. I couldn't let her interrupt.
I prayed for wisdom and punched in her phone number quickly. As soon as I heard “hello”, I began speaking.
“Listen, Rosie: it's Becca. I need you to listen to me.”
“But -” I heard that protest, but I couldn't allow her to go on. So I continued: “Rosie, please. I love you and I have to tell you something. It's important. So please don't interrupt.”
I launched right into it: “Rosie, I know I've told you this before, but I urge you to ask Jesus into your heart. The Bible tells us our salvation is NOT by works; but through the blood of Jesus. He died for you, Rosie. We are all sinners, and the only way we can come to God is through the atonement He provided by His death. You're an awesome person, Rosie, but all the good deeds in the world can't make a person sinless. Only Jesus can. So, please, Rosie. Please accept Him as your Savior.”
I hesitated, and was stunned by continued silence.
“Say something, please, “ I urged her. “Can we at least discuss this?”
After another moment, I got my answer. “Listen, my dear, I tried to tell you: this isn't Rosie.”
Well, she certainly didn't have Rosie's voice, so …. oh, no! I must have dialed the wrong number, and ended up pouring out my soul to a stranger. “I don't know what to say,” I began. I wished the phone would swallow me up and erase the last few minutes. What must this random person think?
“You said it all,” responded the person at the other end of the line. “I'm Sarah. I'm a Christian, too – so I'm proud of you for witnessing to whoever Rosie is.”
“She's my sister.”
“Well, my dear, what a wonderful thing to do for your sister. Can I pray for you – and for Rosie?”
So, I quelled my mounting chagrin and let Sarah pray for us. Armed with her prayers, I would try again to reach my sister with the Good News.
