It was fortunate for us that Master had a plan. Just as the door closed over the Abyss, one of us threw into the hole a single article. As you may know, we were strictly regimented in the hierarchies of our kind. In the physical world that was where the Hindus in India got the idea for instituting the caste system. Master had passed down to the clever ones among us the device by which we instantly communicated up and down our ranks. This object followed Master into the Abyss allowing him to continue giving us orders.
Naturally, with Master no longer roaming the earth, his power was diminished. He couldn’t escape his prison, and we couldn’t wander throughout the world seeking bodies to possess. That was a difficult time for us. The preponderance of humans had come into this period with special capabilities through what they called their glorified bodies. Even had we been able to try, we couldn’t have penetrated the spiritual defenses of these privileged ones.
Ah, but Master had also instructed us that as time passed a certain number of humans who came into the thousand years, would have no such protections; they were the same as before, simply human. Thus, Master told us to be alert, and so we were.
Master was perceptive. He noticed the loophole in the prophecies. That which was written said that he couldn’t deceive the nations; it didn’t indicate that humans themselves couldn’t be misled.
Thus, when a human came one day into the desolate places, with direction from Master below we whispered to the man. It was almost like old times. The human believed because he wanted to exalt himself. We tickled his ears with lies.
This man convinced others to come hear our ideas. They became his ideas. He and his friends gathered and conspired; we fed them what they wanted, and their numbers grew.
It took many hundreds of years for the revolution to foment. The rebels knew their ranks must increase significantly, but fate was with us. Proliferate they did. And one thousand years came to an end.
How good it was to see Master once again. He was pleased at the work we had done, but he directed us to redouble our efforts. Master made it clear that we could not—must not—fail. This was our last opportunity to overthrow the One who sat on His throne above.
We brought our dissidents from the four corners of the world. They were like sand on the seashore, so many had we turned to our cause. Marching across the earth, they surrounded the City of Light that the One above loved, and we hated.
It was a glorious day. Master growled, and the darkness descended. We knew victory was at hand. For all eternity Master would be the one dictating to the masses. Better yet, the despicable Son would fall.
But then…well, it’s hard to describe. Our army was powerful and well-armed. The humans, glorified and not, had nothing. They were completely unprepared for war. Master gave the order to attack. Our forces rushed forward as one. And then were no more.
Master screamed at us to do something. We looked at each other, helpless. The next thing we knew, burning sulfur encompassed us. Our torment knew no bounds. There beside us was Master, spewing obscenities as waves of fire washed over him.
We know there is no future hope of escape. The prophesies have been fulfilled. The creation of this memoir is useless. No others will know—or care—of our plight. The earth as we knew it has been remade in fire by now. The inhabitants live in glory. How we despair that we rebelled with Master so long ago.
Our life is forever lost. We are Legion.
