I’m not trying to be mean. After all, she’s one of my best friends. But holy cow, she sure has been acting bonkers lately.
It all started when she heard Joe Ponzetti tell Wayne Chen he thought long-haired girls were pretty. First of all, Joe is no prize, so why should she care? But after Biology class, she squealed out the news like it was straight from CNN central. I told her, “Who cares?”
I guess Tina did, because two weeks later, she started wearing a long, flowing wig. C’mon: it looked OK on her but everyone knew there was no way she coulda grown her own hair so fast. She thought it made her look like a beauty queen. She flipped that hair around so much I got worried the wig might fall apart or something.
It didn’t. But Joe Ponzetti didn’t notice her longer hair, and he sure didn’t ask her out.
I figured she’d learned her lesson, but then she heard Ned Garnett telling Ken Simmons he really likes girls with long fingernails. Ned isn’t all that great either, but Tina was sporting long nails by that next Monday morning. Everyone knew they were fake, and she they slowed down her word speed in typing class. But she got them – for all the good it did her.
Ned didn’t even bat an eye.
So she moved on to Danny Morris. At least he’s a nice guy. But when she heard him say he thought blue eyes were the prettiest, Tina’s contact lenses were soon tinted blue. I mean: seriously? Tinting your lenses for a guy who doesn’t even notice you?
Because: he didn’t.
More than once, I’ve told her to cut it out. Tina’s a really nice girl just the way she is. She has a beautiful smile, and blonde hair that doesn’t come out of a bottle. She’s good at basketball and tennis, and gets straight A’s in choir classes. I told her to chill out and just be herself, but she just shook her head and said I didn’t understand.
“All those things don’t matter if a boy doesn’t SEE me, Carla. If getting fake nails or a wig is the price I have to pay to get a boyfriend, I guess that’s what I need to do.”
I told her she’s great the way she is, but she told me that meant as much as hearing the same words from her Mom. “You’re my friend,” she answered. “You have to think I’m great.”
Wonderful. Now I’m being compared to someone’s Mom.
Her latest came yesterday, when she heard Bob Olsen say he likes girls who are really big-chested. Now, Tina’s no slouch in that department, so I figured she wouldn’t sweat that one. But she told me she’s gonna talk her Mom into letting her get implants! Yikes!
I just don’t get it. Can’t she see: if a guy can’t see the beauty within, he’s not worth it? I think it’s better to be dateless than with a guy who’s only dating you for things that aren’t even real.
I sure hope she realizes that; before it’s too late. I mean: what would she do if she heard some guy say he likes really short girls? Would she cut off her legs?
All I can do is say, “I hope not.”
Because: the way she's been acting, I'm no longer sure she wouldn't.
