greets the opener
with a wide-mouthed smile.
No one steps inside,
wraps her round
with a crushing hug.
The phone doesn't ring to her heart,
speeding her steps
to an well-known voice.
No hands grab hers,
pulling her over
to their games and play.
She is alone.
Long days have passed
since she was ever warm
in the love of a family.
Years have kept alive
the scattered memories
of the sometimes care.
Her heart is glazed and frozen,
daring not to long
for sisterly love,
or brotherly care.
She keeps her face en-masked,
her chatter light,
fills her hours with trivia
and magazines.
She is alone.
She ventures forth one day,
pointing her steps
to an open church door.
A hand shakes hers,
welcomes her
with a wide-mouthed smile.
She steps inside.
Someone leads her to a seat,
sits beside her,
quietly asks her name.
So glad she came.
The music moves her heart
deep within.
The spoken words
call her home
to the Father of love.
And she's back once more,
returning again and again,
finding her way,
to the family of God.
No longer alone.
